I had an incident last week that I brushed off at the time but has been bothering the heck out of me.

I have many, many covid masks, all of which are from my mother’s unsold inventory (she makes cloth masks). Last month, I picked up another batch which included a neat fabric of the stars and stripes.

I wear it to work last Thursday and as I’m charging in to reach my sad little cubicle, a TEAM MEMBER [wanking motion] stops me and goes, “What are you, a Trump supporter?!” “Umm, why?” “The mask.” “The American flag?!” I use my snarky sales tactics to defuse the loaded “conversation” entirely. Not the appropriate arena for politics (KEEP WORK PROFESSIONAL, PEOPLE).

On Saturday, I walk into a jobsite with H ispanic gentlemen present. I misplaced my Wile-E-Coyote mask but had the stars and stripes in the glove box. Now I’m paranoid and thinking , great, am I antagonizing people over this fucking thing?

While I understand that certain people who believe certain things may or may not be far more “openly patriotic” than others, I very much resented being asked my affiliation based on the American flag, which we are all under, last I checked. Walk down my block, or anywhere in town. Every porch has an American flag, even the guy with 16 Biden banners in his front yard.

Stupid.

The idea that having an American flag is something that only a Trump supporter would do is something that the Trump campaign would very much like everyone to believe.

It seems like trump has created a brand image for himself less than a political standing. That brand is AMERICA! He would love for people to believe that is you love America you’ll support him, and lots of his supporter do think that.

There’s a spot in town where once a week people gather to protest for BML. Last week some one went down to wave a TRUMP flag and antagonize everyone there. Which I thought was funny because at a glance it seemed that he was there supporting them waving the TRUMP flag to show how a much he loves BML and trump. Ha

I kind of think of it the other way around. It seems the other side, the one opposed to Trump, often acts like overt patriotism is embarrassing and somehow uncouth.

That sucks. I might understand if it were a thin blue line flag, which even before its ascent as an anti-BLM banner was problematic. But the American flag is a symbol for everyone (though the GOP would love people to believe that liberals hate the flag). I mean I don’t like the idea that we have so much mindless nationalism or that every politician needs to have a flag pin on their lapel, but that doesn’t mean that any individual showing the flag is guilty of such jingoism.

Technically using it as a mask probably violates the flag code though you can get into debates as to whether the mask actually counts as a flag, and of course the first amendment makes the flag code unenforceable anyway.

I get what you are saying. Though if I was to put myself into that category I would say the the symbols of america aren’t the “being an American” I want to be. Sacrifice, personal accountability, industry and innovation > all the songs and flag based apparel.

In that regard overt patriotism can be seen as a worship of symbols and, for lack of a better term, mythology, not substance.

It better take more to be American than liking fireworks and flags.

It’s what a spiritual leader recently described as "being in the thick of thin things".

The worst part about election season is that now, if anyone does anything bad that’s newsworthy, the headline does not even include the person’s name, it just says “TRUMP SUPPORTER DOES THIS” or “DEMOCRAT CAUGHT DOING THAT”

Because apparently, political affiliation has become t he motivator behind all of society’s ills in the past four years.

Honestly, the last election and this one has me worried about how divisive the powers that be are trying to make this country. In past elections we had bumper stickers, but now we have full on flags. Rather than showing support fr a candidate it feels more like people are picking sides in a war.

The Bush/Dole election was a close race, yet it didn’t feel nearly this aggressive. The McCain/Obama race felt like two candidates that genuinely cared for this country even if they both had their pros and cons. But the Clinton/Trump race? That was two people in it for themselves. I would have voted for literally any other candidate that either party had in their primary.

When it comes down to it, we are a vast country with a smooth gradiant in almost every issue from one side to the next. Most of us are not republican nor democrat. We are somewhere in the middle. It’s something that isn’t being trumpeted.

When it came time to fill out my ballot, the party affiliation was the absolute least area of concern. If I let a party tell me what I should vote for, what to believe in, and whom should be in control, I stop being a person. I become their slave. That is what they want.

But what do I want? I want us to cherish the diversity and differences rather than fight over them.

I very well could with a Versys-X 300 as bike number 2 but honestly I just don’t really want to.

The lowside last winter made me realize just how much less grip there is when the temp drops . Driver s get really d ope y here in the late fall and winter especially with the shorter and rainy days (my buddy got sideswiped) . Also, I’ve been spoiled by riding fair weather in the leathers and don’t want to ride wearing anything else anymore .

When I think of the flag as the symbol of our country, I think of strength through unity. I think of persistence in the face of improbable odds because the cause is worth it. The symbol evokes memories of our humble beginnings and the responsibilities inherent in our success. Those stripes remind us of the humble beginnings, and the stars remind us of how we’ve grown since. The flag is not a graven image, not our golden calf . It’s a reminder, because people need reminders. It’s the ribbon tied around our collective finger to keep us from forgetting something important. If we become embarrassed for it or disavow it or leave it to a certain sect , then we’ve forgotten.

The downside is that what you’re saying is not entirely true. I mean, whatever the Americans want to do with their health care/education/democracy problems and other national issues is up to them. And only them. However, as the US is so large, whatever they do internationally also affects others. So it does matter. If they screw up the global economy, pull out of agreements, defund international cooperation, start wars and similar things, it does matter to us.

It’s not that I don’t think all you’ve said is right and nobel. I do however think there is a lot of patriotism for patriotism sake. So rather than say that the flag is an empty symbol, I would rather say that earning what the flag espouses as a symbol is the important bit.

I think the republican party has hijacked that idea of A merica and run with it.  I think there are a lot of people with good and right views towards American symbols but I think the party as a whole would rather you shout about how much you love the flag rather than remember what it means and how we earned it.

Please don’t fall into the trap of lumping people together under a name. I am a registered Republican, and you just read how I feel. And I’m not a freak outlier. Yes, s ome people do forget what symbols stand for. In fact, it’s a common human behavior. But it’s not the norm, and it’s sad that they get so much of the press in today’s click-bait addicted society .

The Republicans as a party, just like the Democrats as a party, believe in the ideals that underly the flag and want the best for our country and everyone in it. Both your stereotypical flag-waving, crew-cab driving  rednecked Trump supporter and your pinko commie plaid-wearing, Peets organic coffee-swilling Bernie supporter believes in and wants every American citizen to have liberty and social justice. They just have very different ideas about how to best achieve that goal.

Here’s where I think it all goes wrong: when people believe strongly about how to achieve their most important goals, both personally and as a society, and they see another group that believes just as strongly in methods that seem de structive to those goals, they get scared. They get scared that their liberty and way of life are in danger if that other path wins out. With fear like that comes anger. So, they circle the wagons with their like-minded people, and they lash out against the threat perceived from the other side. It’s a human tale much older than our country, and it’s been an obvious motivator of our politics since the nation’s birth. There never were “good ole days” when this wasn’t so. Doesn’t mean we should give in to it.

My warm take (and others will likely disagree) is that this division started when the racists couldn’t stand Obama in the White House.

The growth of social media and fake news in his era is another variable that could shoot a hole in that theory, but I think they were sort of add-ons that fuelled the fire.
